About

I live in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi is north of Adelaide where I used to live and will one day live again. Adelaide is west of Auckland where I once lived, most happily. Auckland is east of Port Pirie where I grew up and which I carry in my heart.

Moons and moons ago, I caught the Trans-Siberian train from Beijing to Moscow and saw Lenin in his tomb. I once, unwittingly, caught the Love Boat from Vancouver to San Fransisco.  San Fransisco I loved, Vancouver too. The Love Boat? Not so much.

If I could live anywhere in the world, I think it would be Mexico. Or Spain. Or maybe Kangaroo Island.

I have two boys. They don’t look like me. Not at all. I thought I was having three, and I guess that tells you something about my intuitive powers. I don’t have any cats, but I’ve had my share. For a short while there I had a Dog. Just because you’ve got a Dog, doesn’t make you a Dog Person. That’s something I’ve learned.

In February 2009, I turned 40. My, but it seemed like a big deal at the time, but nothing much happened that year. In 2011, I turned 42 on 4/2 and I want to believe it’s significant.

I write short stories and essays and my first novel, Black Dust Dancing, was published by Wakefield Press in March 2009.

A few years ago, I started performing standup comedy. It feels good when people laugh and shit when people don’t. In August 2009, I went to the Edinburgh Fringe and put on my first solo show. It felt good when people laughed and shit when people didn’t. The mister was my tech crew, and we had a brilliant time.

In Adelaide I had a Real Job I never blogged about. Here, in Abu Dhabi, I’ve got myself a Real Job. My Dream Job. I’ll never blog about it.

    Hello Tracy,

I just came across your blog when I was ‘googling’ my mother, Sophie van Rood, (The Banana Room) to see get some links for my own blog.

This is quite wonderful. The picture on your blog of the black polymer clay hand earrings,
were made my me in 1986-8. (I only have one pair left after all these years) Sophie used to stock some of my pieces there at times.
I live in Melbourne these days, still making jewellery, albeit different from those early days.
It was lovely to come across this, and your writing looks like I should explore it.

Anyway, I wish you all the best,

    Candy

    (aka Candida van Rood)

I think you might have the best ‘About’ page I have ever read on a blog. I am totally jealous.
